The most common backup failure we see at On Your Side Technologies is not that a business had no backup. It is that they had a backup that had been silently failing for months, and nobody knew until they needed to restore something.
Here is the specific problem: most backup tools send a confirmation email when the job runs, not when it succeeds. A backup job can launch, hit an error halfway through, and still send you a green checkmark notification. You think you are covered. You are not.
Do this today: Open your backup software and look for the last completed restore test, not the last backup job. If you cannot find one, or if it has been longer than 90 days, your backup is essentially untested. That means it is theoretical protection, not real protection.
Dr. Melody White has been reviewing backup configurations for clients since the late 1990s, and this specific gap, confirmed backups that cannot actually restore, comes up in roughly half of new client assessments. The fix is not expensive. It is just a step most small businesses were never told to take.
If you want us to run a restore test on your current setup and tell you exactly where you stand, that is something we do as part of a basic systems review.
