Happy International Youth Day! Today we celebrate young people’s contributions to positive change, and every tech article you’ll read will tell you the same thing: kids need to learn AI skills or they’ll be left behind.
I’m going to push back on that.
Not because AI isn’t important — it absolutely is. But because we’re approaching youth AI education completely backwards.
The Skills Gap Nobody’s Talking About
Here’s what I see when I consult with businesses trying to implement AI: the people who struggle most aren’t the ones who don’t understand prompts or can’t navigate ChatGPT. Those skills take about an afternoon to learn.
The people who struggle are the ones who can’t tell when AI is confidently wrong. Who don’t know how to verify information. Who accept machine-generated mediocrity because they’ve never developed a strong sense of what excellent looks like.
We’re so busy teaching young people to use AI tools that we’re forgetting to teach them the things AI genuinely cannot do.
What AI Actually Can’t Do (Yet)
Here’s my short list of skills that become more valuable, not less, in an AI-saturated world:
- Ethical reasoning — AI can tell you what’s legal. It cannot tell you what’s right.
- Original creative vision — AI remixes. Humans imagine things that don’t exist yet.
- Deep domain expertise — AI knows a little about everything. Mastery still requires years of focused human effort.
- Relationship building — No algorithm will close a deal over a handshake or comfort someone through a crisis.
- BS detection — Arguably the most critical skill of the AI age.
When I work with business owners, the ones who thrive with AI aren’t the most technically savvy. They’re the ones who know their industry cold and can immediately spot when a generated report misses something crucial.
A Better Framework for Youth AI Education
Instead of teaching kids to be AI operators, what if we taught them to be AI skeptics? Not cynics — skeptics. There’s a difference.
A healthy skeptic asks: Where did this information come from? What might be missing? Is this genuinely good, or just good enough? What do I know that this tool doesn’t?
These questions require exactly the kind of critical thinking that educators have been championing for decades. AI education isn’t new curriculum — it’s traditional curriculum with higher stakes.
The Competitive Advantage of Being Human
Here’s my prediction: in ten years, basic AI proficiency will be table stakes. Everyone will know how to generate content, analyze data, and automate routine tasks.
The young people who will actually lead? They’ll be the ones who spent their formative years developing judgment, creativity, and expertise deep enough to know when the machines are wrong.
So on this International Youth Day, maybe instead of enrolling kids in another prompt engineering course, we encourage them to read deeply, argue passionately, build things with their hands, and develop opinions strong enough to override a confident algorithm.
The future belongs to humans who know what makes them human.
