Your Website Has Been Trying to Tell You Something (Here’s How to Finally Listen)

Your website generates data every single day. Visitors arrive, click around, leave, and sometimes—if you’re lucky—they fill out a contact form or make a purchase. But here’s the thing: most business owners treat their website analytics like that pile of mail on the kitchen counter. You know it’s there. You know you should probably look at it. You don’t.

Let’s change that today. Because your website data isn’t just numbers—it’s your customers trying to tell you what they want.

Start With the Questions, Not the Dashboard

Google Analytics can feel like walking into a cockpit when you just wanted to drive to the grocery store. Too many buttons, too many screens, immediate regret.

Here’s the fix: don’t open your analytics tool until you have a specific question. Try these:

  • Where are people giving up on my site?
  • Which pages actually lead to contact form submissions?
  • Are people finding me through Google, social media, or somewhere else?

One question, one answer. That’s it. You can graduate to complex analysis later. Right now, you need insights you can actually use.

The Three Numbers That Actually Matter

If you only track three things, make it these:

1. Bounce Rate by Page
Bounce rate tells you the percentage of visitors who land on a page and leave without doing anything else. A high bounce rate on your homepage? Problem. A high bounce rate on your contact confirmation page? That’s fine—they already did what you wanted.

2. Top Exit Pages
Where are people when they decide to leave? If everyone exits from your pricing page, that’s a signal. Maybe your prices aren’t displayed clearly, or maybe there’s no obvious next step. This is where your website is losing the sale.

3. Conversion Path
What pages do people visit before they contact you or make a purchase? This shows you what content is actually doing the selling. Double down on what works.

The “So What” Test

Here’s where most people get stuck. They look at the data and think, “Okay, 2,000 people visited my site last month. So what?”

Every metric needs to pass the “so what” test. Traffic is up 20%? So what—did revenue increase? Average session duration dropped? So what—are fewer people converting, or are they just finding what they need faster?

Data without context is just trivia. Always connect the number to a business outcome.

When the Data Doesn’t Make Sense

Sometimes you’ll see something weird. A page with fantastic engagement but zero conversions. A traffic spike from a country where you don’t do business. A blog post from 2019 that suddenly gets 500 visits.

Don’t panic. Investigate. Often there’s a simple explanation—a bot, a Reddit thread, a broken tracking code. Sometimes there’s an opportunity you didn’t know existed.

If you’re consistently confused by what your analytics are showing you, that’s a sign you might need a fresh set of eyes. At On Your Side Technologies, we help business owners cut through the noise and figure out what their data is actually saying—and more importantly, what to do about it.

Your Action Item for This Week

Log into your analytics platform (Google Analytics, your website builder’s built-in stats, whatever you have). Find your top exit pages. Pick the one that surprises you most and ask yourself: why are people leaving here?

You might not have the answer immediately. But you’ve started listening. And that’s how websites get better—one honest question at a time.
